Good advice Simon. The 1014 actually runs from 6 1,5v cells giving a total of 9 volts. These cells are wired in series and they all need to be A1 for the bird to sing.
The trouble with 6 cells is that we now have 12 contact faces that must transfer the power. And the camera body has 8 contacts that need looking at.

does the camera have an external battery supply connection, and is it possible for that to work even if the internal battery compartment goes bad?

No, Alex, it doesn't apper to. Unless I'm missing it: don't have a manual.
My next question, before attempting anything else: if the battery level check is not responding, does it make sense to check the off/on trigger?

the 1014E does not have an external supply option, the xl-s does
were you able to do a voltage test ?
I'am not the best at explaining stuff(I read my last post)
the reason I suggested only putting the 4 handle batts in was to take the smaller battery compartment out of the loop, as I said before the zoom servo will work (on L speed)with just those 4 batts(camera and battery meter wont go), if it works then the handle's fine and so is the off R RL switch. Which means the smaller battery compartment is now suspect. The stabliser thingy is just there to ensure a good contact with the battery and hold it in place(from what I can tell) you should have 3 volts across the 2 springs there as well

Spent no less than 4 hours tearing down the 1014E. What an awesome experience!
It really instills respect for these incredible machines.
The only negative I saw is that the silver plastic is deteriorating: many small age cracks and even powder on stressed corners and screw holes.
Anyway: I was all over the place with my multi-meter. There's power everywhere. right up to the battery level check (which I figure to have gone bad and not a part of the problem. The meter has never worked either)
There's an orange power supply wire which shows power entering & exiting the off/on mechanism. But no reading when I touch the switches that make up the off/on chain. The connections are purely mechanical metal to metal plates and gates. The orange wire connections are good.
So, I'm totally baffled at this point.
Looks like I'm headed for the shop.
Thanks for the help.
As John Wayne once said: "Some things are bigger than the man."
By the way: Yes I did end up with an extra screw....

Well spotted Alex. Just could minutely possibly be that, as the 1014 was dead till you switched the shutter sector dial to "rewind".

Here is an insultingly simple question...
Some cameras won't work if you do an autofade, unless you fade back up.
Do you remember the very last operation you performed with the camera when it was working properly?

Don't worry about insulting me: after all, I'm the one with the "screw loose"
Tried the fader thing...not the problem.
Thanks for trying.
